What is the advantage of using a long wire antenna?

Most "long wire antennas" are modifications of the classic 1921 long wire antenna designed and built by inventor Harold H. Beverage.

"Beverage Antennas" are excellent receiving antennas, and are often used by DXers searching for AM radio signals in the 160 meter Amateur Radio Band and in the MediumWave Broadcast Band.
